3. Introduction

Ayurvedha comes from a 3000 year old tradition of health and healing that rids the body of impurities and promotes well-being through massage, meditation, herbal therapy and diet. From lotus spas to medicated massages to herbal saunas and steam baths, let nature revitalize you in a way you’ve never experienced before.

Ayurveda literally means “the Science of Life”. It is the oldest known healing system on the planet. It dates back to some 4000-5000 years. The aim of Ayurveda is not only to heal the sick but the prevention of illness and preservation of health. Leading to a long healthy, happy life and living. Ayurveda is based on the principle, that every individual has a unique constitution.  So it is very important each individual discover their unique Body/Mind type and live their life accordingly to maintain balance and harmony. When the individual is balanced the 3 DOSHAS (humors), as they are called, VATA (Wind), PITTA (Bile) and KAPHA (Phlegm) are in perfect resonance with nature.

The basis of Ayurveda treatment is a process of purification and rejuvenation. According to Ayurveda the accumulation of “Ama” or toxic substances in the body, years of poor diet, weak digestion and incomplete elimination of waste matter, inadequate sleep, pollution and stress lead to the imbalance of the Tri Dosha and the build up of toxins, which can lead to ill-health.

Ayurveda treatment is designed to gather the toxins in specific parts of the body and then expel these substances from the body. Once the body is purified it is ready to receive and benefit from the rejuvenation process, which can lead to lasting good health.

Ayurveda treatment has two aspects to it.

Shamana Chikitsa – treats and manages the diseases that have already manifested. Ayurveda has thousands of medicines and recipes consisting of herbs and mineral products and biological products which are used individually or in the form of compounds to manage and cure diseases.

Shodana Chikitsa- is an internal process of purification that is used to cure and prevent disease, and more importantly to promote the healthy state of the body and longevity.

The three stages of purification are:

  1. Purva Karma (pre- purification) – getting the body prepared for the main purification
  2. Pradhana Karma (main purification) – five types of purification (Pancha Karma)
  3. Paschath Karma (post purification) – rejuvenation therapy

The diseases listed above are the kinds of diseases that are currently being treated in some of the recognized hotel based Ayurvedic centers in Sri Lanka. The kinds of treatments administered are also listed with a brief description of the administering process. It is obvious that some of the above stated treatments can be administered only by Ayurvedic Physicians only. But some of these can also be practiced by personnel who are trained for the purpose with or without the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician. These are mostly external treatments and we believe that it is these treatments that could be recommended for a horizon related tourist establishment and they are listed below.

1. Body Oil Application and Massage
2. Head Oil Application and Massage
3. Facial Treatment
4. Herbal Bath
5. Herbal Steam Bath
6. Herbal Steam Inhalation
7. Fomentation
8. Oil Picho
9. Body Oil Bath
10. Synchronized Medicinal Body Application

However, with the availability of an Ayurvedic Physician almost all the treatments listed above could be practiced any where in the island.

Further it is suggested that a project such as a small scale plantation of herbs under the Mahavilachchiya eVillage program would be a great boost to an enterprise of this nature.
